Waldners & Nurture Wins in NYC: Henry J. Carter Healthcare Facility

Chuck Anderson and the team at Waldner’s, along with the New York Steelcase/Nurture team, shared a major victory recently, winning a major piece of one of the largest healthcare projects in NYC, the new Henry J. Carter Healthcare Facility. The Henry J. Carter Healthcare Facility is a new 500+ bed long-term care rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility in Harlem. Named for Henry J. Carter, founder of Wheelchair Charities and a 40-year supporter of rights for those in wheelchairs, the facility supports patients who have suffered spinal-cord injuries, strokes or have degenerative conditions such as cerebral palsy, and require care focused on rehabilitation and improving functions for daily living. Many of the patients are medically fragile and in need of long-term acute care that can’t be provided at other hospitals. More than 100 of these patients are on ventilators – one of the largest such programs in the country.

Nurture was recognized for solutions that served both aesthetic and functional needs. Over $1.1 million was invested in Nurture, Steelcase and Coalesse brands for the facility. Nurture solutions included Empath recliners, chosen for its easy side access for those in wheelchairs and also its durability, and Mineral recliners, chosen with the flip-down arm and wider seat, intended for their larger patients. Folio and Opus were used for casework as a way to warm up spaces and provide necessary functionality, and an extensive collection of Tava was used in lobby, lounge and waiting spaces.

“It is rare to create such a functional and aesthetically pleasing space within a long-term care and skilled nursing facility,” said Tracy Nichols, Area Healthcare Manager for Nurture in New York and New Jersey. “Array Architects and the client did a phenomenal job with this facility, embracing the Nurture evidence-based design philosophy, the Center for Health Design methodologies and truly creating a healing environment for patients in great need of long-term care. This is a stellar model for patients in need of long-term care and rehabilitation within the city of New York. The collaboration between Steelcase, Nurture, our dealer partner Waldner’s, and the team at Array Architects was tremendous.”

“There were more that 650 people who attended the open house event and the general consensus was that the spaces and furniture looked beautiful,” said Michelle K. DeForrest, the interior designer at Array Architects. “The furniture really made a big difference in helping to demonstrate what the resident’s experience will be like after they move in this fall.”
